Three Basic Skills

There are really only three Basic English skills that you need to effectively work and succeed in an international Business environment.

1) NOUN PHRASE – I’m sure everyone is familiar with English. But when businesses resort to “rub and sniff newspaper adds” to increase sales most people don’t understand what that means.

This creates such a stigma, although unjustified, that many of the newer employees and managers often end up trying to translate from their native language to English and vice-versa what they can not immediately understand .

It is so common to “translate” the Business English we don’t understand, in fact, that many non-native English speakers try to pass themselves off as being fluent in English. And it’s not their fault. Most have been conditioned, perhaps, to think of themselves as Fluent by other school methods and systems.

But before going into details about the other two Basic English Skills, allow me to answer one of the most frequently asked, and probably the most basic of all English skills, “What is a NOUN PHRASE”?

Let’s break it down. A NOUN PHRASE simply means combining two or more words into a single unit. And in this new group of words, the first part of the compound qualifies the main noun by substantially modifying its original meaning (bomb, dogs, dress, pies, etc). As the name suggests, NOUN PHRASES simplify the way we express new ideas, products and businesses. Instead of an elaborate sentence we can use a couple of words to say basically the same thing.

an atom bomb police dogs a silk dress

apple pies a soccer field a life guard

BUT NOT:

a bomb which is made of atomic particles

a dog that helps the police

a dress which is made of silk

a pie which was made of apple, etc.

 2) LISTENING AND UNDERSTANDING – would usually, but not always include, watching the news on TV, enjoying regular TV shows, going to the theater or even to a movie theater, taking part in conference calls, carrying out a business conversation over the phone, etc.

3) READING – emails, business texts and spread sheets are also essential to doing business in English. This skill will also be discussed in this site. It should not be confused with the other two, especially with the NOUN PHRASE skill with which it is commonly confused.

IMPORTANT POINT: Let your English skills increase as the result of reading a book or newspaper; or by watching and listening to English on TV. More people fail than succeed by trying to do it the other way around – they try to speak English by emphasizing grammar. As you read through our online course that follows, you will see this concept unfold before you.
